This course is totally designed to improve the practical skills of Agricultural undergraduates in basic
livestock husbandry activities. This includes general management and production activities in Cattle, Buffaloes, Poultry, Swine, Goat, Rabbit, Miscellaneous poultry and Micro livestock animals. It is also expected to develop the skills of students in livestock extension activities. This course initially provides hands on training for students on identification of different breeds of livestock species and their rearing systems such as intensive, semi-intensive and extensive.
This course offers an overview of all aspects of forage crops production and use of forage crops as green forage, hay and silage with emphasis on commonly available forage. The course provides a comprehensive introduction to present status of pastures and fodders production in different Agro-climatic zones in Sri Lanka and describes potentials, constraints and remedies for green forage production.
This course is to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills in identifying and controlling common animal diseases and conditions that highly affecting the productivity of farm animals. Together with a basic idea about the causes of diseases and conditions, common bacterial, viral, protozoal, fungal and parasitic infections in major farm animals are discussed. At the same time, main metabolic disorders and other related conditions that alter normal animal productivity also are discussed. The basic skills in wound management, deworming and vaccination of farm animals together with updated knowledge in common pharmaceuticals used in animal treatments also will be given by this course.
This course covers basic principles of water resources engineering together with different irrigation techniques. Soil water relationships in relation to irrigation and water requirement of crops will also be discussed

It begins with the meaning of soil and its systematic study and is followed by significance of soil in agriculture; soil formation; physical, biological and chemical properties of soil; soil - plant interactions and our role in managing soil - environment interactions for sustainable productivity.
